The Sensory Landscape

  • Woodlands Scotland Woodlands Ballachulish, Scotland, PH49 4AA United Kingdom (map)

This 3 Day workshop is aimed at creatives who would like to discover new ways to interpret the landscape. It’s structured to guide you through the various stages of location drawing, tonal studies, exploratory colour work and finally working back in a studio setting to develop ideas further.

Participants will begin with drawing materials such as inks, graphite and pastels, then gently move into more mixed media work as the workshop progresses. I’ll guide you through my unique process of building layers that work together to suggest natural forms, energy and movement.

We’ll put aside the idea of trying to replicate what we see and instead use our senses to tune into a deeper connection with the landscape. How can we paint a breeze? How can we express the sound of water? The softness of foliage?…

Through understanding the qualities of our mediums, such as the transparency of ink against the opacity of acrylic, we’ll explore ways to bring depth to our studies through contrasts.

The Location and Accommodation

The Scottish Highlands has always been one of my favourite painting locations. The sheer scale of the scenery and the vibrant colours make Scotland one of the most beautiful landscapes to paint.

This 3-Day workshop is in collaboration with https://www.woodlands.scot/ located in the heart of Glencoe. Together we have created a unique workshop that will not only be a great learning experience, but a chance to relax in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK.

You have the option to stay on-site in the super cool Woodlands Eco Pods which are nestled amongst a private woodland backdrop or join the course as a non-residential participant. (prices are below)

During the workshop we’ll visit a selection of outdoor locations around the lodge, as well as have access to a purpose-built painting studio where we will develop our ideas further.
